Umbrella Liability - What You Need To Know
What Is It?
Umbrella liability insurance provides personal liability coverage above the amount provided by your automobile and homeowners insurance policies. It also covers certain claims that are not covered by your primary policies.
Why Do I Need It?
Do you own your home? Do you own a rental property? Do you participate in volunteer activities within your community?
If you currently carry liability insurance on your automobile, house, boat, etc. with limits of $1,000,000 you may not have sufficient coverage in the event of a catastrophe. The costs to defend against a lawsuit and court awards are continually rising. A personal umbrella liability policy can increase your amount of liability insurance at a reasonable cost and give you and your family additional protection and peace of mind. The cost for a $1 million umbrella policy usually starts at under $200 per year.
Umbrella liability policies can also provide coverage for areas not normally covered by a personal liability policy.
Some examples are:
- Personal injury including liable and slander
- Wrongful eviction
- Defamation of character
- Liability for volunteers to non-profit organizations such as service clubs or minor sports associations
- False arrest
If you own a rental property or do volunteer work you may not be properly covered unless you purchase an Umbrella Liability policy.
There are many different personal umbrella liability policies on the insurance market. Please call one of our licensed insurance professionals to discuss the one that best suits your needs.
